I'm talking about hi-res images and stuff like that, for parts of the screen with a "display: none" in the media query.
Those files are still loaded by the browser when you set it to, and it's unbelievably frustrating to have to wait 30+ seconds for a web page to load just to use a search form on a website when you only have edge connectivity.
"Back in the day" businesses were forced to choose either to have their desktop site displayed on mobile, when everyone had GPRS and a few happy ones Edge, or to develop a functional mobile site free of their crap.
Nowadays, thanks to media queries and bad short-term strategies, the majority of businesses just go the "just make some media queries so the desktop site can fit on their screen" path, without any consideration for the users' potential constraints like connectivity or data plans.
